History

Heurich Park Community Garden is located within Heurich Park in the City of Hyattsville, along with the Heurich Dog Park and its extensive movement-based playground. It carries the name of Christian Heurich, who emigrated to the US in 1866 from Germany. Heurich, pronounced either HOY•rick or HY•rick, was a very successful DC area brewmaster in the 19th century, known for his brewery and beer garden, and his Senate beer, in particular. He was the biggest employer in DC at one point, after the federal government.  He also owned a dairy farm named Bellevue in Hyattsville. Currently, Heurich Park is all there is left of the Heurich name in Hyattsville, except this garden and the dog park, and Northwestern High School’s athletic field. The legacy continues in DC though, through the Heurich House Museum and 1921, a biergarten in the museum. To learn more, click the links below.
